Style

  • Style is the essence of a writer's control.
  • Words and syntax control the reader response, as advertisers know:

Just Do It!

This Nike tagline communicates urgency and asserts power over the reader.
Imagine if "Just Do It" was changed to:
Do you want to go running?
Although a question can imply the desirability of an action, this question
neither asserts power nor punctuates its point with the shortest sentence possible.

  • Control the flow and emphasis of ideas with syntax.
  • Understand and be able to manipulate a reader's reaction.
  • Revise all first-draft sentences.
