Time Is Money
  • Strive for economic prose. Eliminate strings of meaningless little words and choose precise words.

Say the most in the fewest possible words.

Before: Many researchers have done studies on intelligence testing and concluded that intelligence tests are biased against female and minority students.

After: Researchers suspect bias in measures of intelligence, because white men outperform women and minorities.

  • Eliminate meta-discourse, writing about writing.

Delete "I am going to argue that…" Just do it.

  • Save "there is/it is" for the podium effect.

Delete "there is/are" and "it is" unless you REALLY want to emphasize the word following "it is."

"It is IMPERATIVE that we act immediately." Hear the emphasis?
