What to do if you are accused of plagiarism

Your best defense against plagiarism is to:

1. Keep all pre-writing materials and write the date on them
  •  including notes, outlines, concept maps, and all drafts
2. Provide sources, if accused, and display the pre-writing and editing process
  •  an earlier draft might have the citation or quotation marks, which were accidentally deleted in the final editing
  • your notes on sources and working outlines will demonstrate your attempts to integrate the source into your own voice
Never create a separate computer file for your references; ensure that the references appear in your paper's electronic file, or you may forget to print out your works cited page when you turn your assignment in.
