Why Didn't I Think of That?

How to Avoid Plagiarism

Source: a place from which something comes; origin

~ The New American Webster Handy College Dictionary,
eds. Albert and Loy Morehead (NY: Signet, 1995) ~

You plagiarize if you present someone else's words, ideas, or images as your own.

You avoid plagiarism if you cite sources for all the ideas of others that you use in your writing.

The "Oops!" Factor:

Writers sometimes plagiarize ideas from outside sources without realizing that they are doing so.

  • For each point that you make, ask yourself "how did I arrive at this conclusion?"
  • If you feel a vague sense of déjà vu while writing, ask yourself again.
