Style: The MLA Way
Guidelines from Keys for Writers

What's the Purpose of MLA?

  • Documentation of sources is necessary not just in research papers but in any written work that contains information from or references to texts outside itself.

  • MLA citations function to:
    - lead your reader to the part of a text you focus on,
    - and help your reader to distinguish between your ideas and reasoning and those you derive from other sources.

How Do I Use MLA?

  • MLA documentation calls for short parenthetical references in the body of the paper and a list of works cited at the end.
