Analysis

Analyze: separate into its elements; examine the constituents of; examine critically
(The New American Webster Handy College Dictionary, eds.
Albert and Loy Morehead (NY: Signet, 1995)

  • Moving beyond summary and observation
  • To develop a thesis for the analytic paper, you need to perform preliminary analysis of primary sources before gathering secondary sources
  • The bulk of analytical discovery actually occurs while you are writing
  • Leave ample time to revise your thesis, focus, and structure as you draft and develop
  • You've reached analytical levels when someone could argue against your interpretation of the evidence: when someone could disagree with you

Analysis:

60% of American households have computers, and 60% of those households have children

The presence of computers and access to internet is influencing the nation's children

The data suggests a relationship between youth and the adoption of technology. We can expect that digital technologies will have their full impact in 10-20 years, when today's children are in the workforce.

Analysis:

In letters exchanged by writers of the Declaration of Independence, we find debates concerning including African-American men in definitions of citizenship and representation.

These letters suggest a struggle between defining individuals by race or class (conditions of servitude).

These letters demonstrate an ironic collapsing of the distinction between race and class. Race is ultimately defined as a condition of servitude, thus it is not, in itself, a category of identity, even though it produces "conditions of servitude."

In William Faulkner's As I Lay Dying, each character's perspective is represented, in separate chapters. Even the deceased mother gives her point of view in the middle of the novel.

The novel lacks an omniscient narrator. This lack forces the reader to fill in the gaps between character perspectives and piece together the events.

The novel form conveys the sense that experience is completely dependent on point of view and individual narrative; families are fractured because they lack a unified story and voice.

Analysis of Film

Analysis:

In French Twist, the protagonist wears an apron, naked, after she has begun an extra-marital lesbian love affair.

The camera first films her from the front; the apron covers her body. When she turns away from the camera, we see that she is completely naked; her body is thus exposed behind the apron.

The character is only partially defined by the apron, the symbol for domesticity, homemaking, and marriage; "underneath" or "behind" her domestic role, she is freely naked and enjoying the satisfaction of her own desires. Even though she still loves her husband and dislikes conflict, the clothing suggests that the affair is liberating her from a subservient role. She can simultaneously be a housewife and express her desires.

In this opinion, the court states that pornography is inappropriate for children.

If pornography comes under free speech, then free speech does not apply to children.

The law faces a theoretical problem. If free speech laws do not apply to children, then the court has dismissed the concept of democratic education as engagement with the free marketplace of ideas. It thus has to allow censorship of many types of texts.
